We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them
ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first chapter is New Year's
Day. ~Edith Lovejoy Pierce

Kitchen  tips

  1. No buttermilk?  add 1 Tsp. distilled vinegar to 1 cup milk and let sit for  five minutes.
  2. For easy removal of  measured syrups or honey coat measuring spoon or cup with cooking spray
  3. Save butter wrappers to grease baking dishes or cake pans or even cookie sheets. ( i keep mine refrigerated in a Ziploc bag)
  4. For quick preparation i keep chopped onion, bell peppers, and jalapenos in a freezer bag in the freezer. ( i just smack them on the counter to loosen the pieces, and measure out the amount i need.) Also, when ever i have the time, I chop up a few  and add them to the bag. This way,  i always have a supply on hand.
  5. You can buy larger cans of tomato paste and freeze portions in ice cube trays and store in a freezer bag or container.
  6. For moms who want to make their own baby food you can  cook and puree veggies and use # 5 method of freezing and storage. It works great and saves you so much money!
  7. Make your own corn syrup 1 1/2 cups = by dissolving 1 cup sugar in 1/2 cup water.
  8. Freeze any leftover chicken stock . It brings such flavor to vegetables or to add to dressings . You never know when a recipe may call for chicken stock and it is much more inexpensive to use your own.
  9. Add a raw potato to a dish that too much salt has been added. The potato will absorb the excess salt and save the dish.
  10. To keep lemons longer, store them in a bowl of water in the fridge.
  11. I use rubber bands to keep opened bags of frozen veggies, french fries , candy or pretzels closed. It is also inexpensive. I always keep a bag of the bands on hand, and they can be reused over and over again.
  12. You can use life saver candies to stabilize birthday candles on a cake or cupcakes and they make a cute edible decoration .
  13. Put a mini marshmallow in the bottom of a sugar ice cream cone before filling  to prevent drips .
  14. To keep greens ( collards , mustard , turnip) from smelling while cooking add a cleaned unshelled pecan to the pot before cooking.
  15. To keep potatoes from budding, place an apple in the bag with the potatoes.
